Weekly Report: Lake Waco - February 25th, 2024

  Structure & Underwater Topography: This impoundment of the North, Middle, and South Bosque Rivers is dominated by natural shorelines, including bedrock, clay/silt, and sand and gravel flats. Submerged timber and flooded terrestrial vegetation add to the diversity of natural habitat for fish while man-made habitats include submerged roadbeds, the old dam, boat ramps, marinas, piers, docks, and bridge pilings. The Waco Inland Fisheries District built and deployed rectangular PVC fish habitat structures in three locations near mid- reservoir to help attract and hold sportfish for anglers. The three freshwater reef locations are located near Koehne Park, Island Cove, and Lakeshore Cove. Previous freshwater reefs deployed into Lake Waco were comprised of Crappie Condos, made with bamboo from local stands, however the lifespan of these natural structures has passed. Habitat & Underwater Topography: This area of the Bosque is predominantly made up of submerged timber and flooded terrestrial vegetation add to the diversity of natural habitat for fish while man-made habitats include submerged roadbeds, the old dam, boat ramps, marinas, piers, docks, and bridge pilings.   Tips / Current Conditions: Look for the pattern to change in the next few weeks as the weather and water begin to warm. White bass spawn is starting to trickle in the feeder creeks at the lower portions of the creek mouths and some are in the creeks themselves. Rooster Tails work well by letting it hit the bottom then reeling back. Every time it rains a new batch of minnows will show. Target 1-5 feet of water, for big blue catfish then work your way to deeper water. Belton Lake - Overview:  ·        Interactive GIS TPWD Structure Map: Texas Fish Habitat Structures (arcgis.com) ·        Belton Lake Current Fill-level: Water Data For Texas Belton Lake is located on  the Leon River in Bell and Coryell counties and 5 miles northwest of the City of Belton, offering anglers accessible opportunities for small mouth, large mouth, and striped bass throughout early spring to late summer.  Initially impounded in 1954 by the Army Corps of Engineers, Belton Lake sits at 594-feet above sea level (conservation pool) and spans 12,385 surface acres, boasting a 124-foot maximum depth. Water levels fluctuated from nearly 10 feet above the conservation pool to 14.5 feet below conservation pool between August 2019 and May 2023.
